Jesus’ Appreciation of John the Baptist

Text:Matthew 11:7-15

Reflection and Question: Jesus could hardly speak more highly of John the Baptist than He does here when He says, “Among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist” and “he is Elijah who is to come.” No prophet in Israel had higher stature than Elijah, who was expected to return just before the Messiah. In saying so much about John, Jesus is hinting at His place. Meanwhile, John is in prison and Jesus is an itinerant preacher and healer, drawing crowds but also derision. What do you see when you consider the life and teaching of John the Baptist?

Prayer: On Jordan’s banks the Baptist’s cry announces that the Lord is nigh;
awake and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings!
For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward;
once more upon thy people shine and fill the world with love divine. Amen.
